Transforming Greater Johor Bahru: E-ART and South KTM Commuter Line

Greater Johor Bahru is set to undergo a major transformation in its public transportation landscape with the implementation of the Medium Capacity Transit (MCT) system, as outlined in the latest “Pelan Transit Laluan Rel dan Koridor Transit”, in October 2025. This strategic initiative come with South KTM commuter train lines, Elevated-Autonomous Rapid Transit and Rapid Transit System.

Medium Capacity Transit (MCT) for Urban Mobility

The MCT system represents a key component of Greater Johor Bahru’s vision to establish an efficient, affordable, and environmentally friendly transit network. The plan proposes a series of elevated corridors designed to improve accessibility between key urban centres and residential zones using Elevated-Autonomous Rapid Transit (E-ART) system. The identified transit corridors include:

  • Corridor Transit Skudai
  • Corridor Transit Iskandar Puteri
  • Corridor Transit Tebrau
  • Corridor Transit Pasir Gudang

Park & Ride Facilities for Seamless Commuting

To encourage public transport usage and reduce private vehicle dependency, the plan includes the development of “Park & Ride” facilities. These strategically located hubs will allow commuters to park their cars and motorcycles conveniently before continuing their journey via the MCT network. This initiative aims to create a more integrated and user-friendly transport ecosystem that supports last-mile connectivity.

Integration with KTM Commuter Train Lines

Complementing the MCT network, two KTM commuter train lines are proposed to further enhance regional mobility:

  1. Kulai – JB Sentral Line
  2. Tanjung Pelepas – Pasir Gudang Line

Both lines are designed to interconnect with Transit-Oriented Developments (TODs) that enable seamless transfers between commuter trains and the MCT corridors—particularly the Corridor Transit Skudai and Corridor Transit Tebrau. This integration will provide passengers with greater convenience and flexibility while fostering economic growth around the TOD zones.

Connectivity to Johor Bahru Sentral and RTS Link

All proposed MCT corridors and commuter lines will converge at Johor Bahru Sentral, the region’s main transportation hub. Furthermore, the integration with the Johor Bahru–Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) will strengthen cross-border connectivity, supporting the growing number of daily commuters between Johor and Singapore and enhancing Johor Bahru’s position as a key metropolitan gateway.

Implementation Timeline

The comprehensive transportation plan is set to be implemented in three phases, with full completion targeted by 2035. Each phase will progressively expand the network coverage, ensuring efficient delivery and adaptability to future urban development trends.

My View

Through the integration of elevated transit corridors, commuter lines, TODs, and cross-border linkages, this initiative will redefine urban mobility, stimulate economic growth, and improve the overall quality of life for residents across southern Johor.
